Take The Long Way Home

"Take the Long Way Home is a song that I wrote that's on two levels - on one level I'm talking about not wanting to go home to the wife, 'take the long way home' because she treats you like part of the furniture. But there's a deeper level to the song, too. I really believe we all want to find our true home, find that place in us where we feel at home, and to me, home is in the heart. When we’re in touch with our heart and we're living our life from our heart, then we do feel like we found our home." ~ Roger Hodgson

Fool's Overture

"Fool's Overture is one of my favorite pieces that I've ever written. It was very magical the way it came together. It was actually three separate pieces of music that I had for a few years and then, one day, they kind of all slotted together in what I think is a magnificent, kind of epic piece of music. I always imagined performing it with an orchestra, so when I did start playing with orchestras back in the '90s, it was such a thrill to play this song. I still get goosebumps to this day every time I get an opportunity to do that but, again, it's a collage of different historical events.

There's so much in this song, it's very hard to pin it down into one direction. Churchill is in there and I'm talking about Jesus in the second verse. It's very much about the fall of mankind, 'history recalls how great the fall can be, while everybody's sleeping, the boats put out to sea.' It was very much the way I was perceiving life. The people were in denial and not seeing the way we were heading and the planet was heading - and it’s still happening today to a lesser degree. I don't want to get too conceptual over it but it was like a collage of different concepts and ideas that just really stimulate the imagination." ~ Roger Hodgson

 

Fool's Overture

"Fool's Overture es una de mis piezas favoritas que he escrito .Fue muy mágico como se construyó. "Hide in Your Shell came to me at a time when I remember I was feeling very lonely – lonely both in life and within the band - with no one who shared my spiritual leanings. It’s a song that speaks to that place in all of us that feels alone so that we just want to hide in our shell - that place that doesn’t feel safe in the world, that feels we have no close relationships that we can trust, yet that part that wants to be helped, that longs for connection.

At the same time, it’s a way to say 'Can I help you?' as a way to get out of our shell. Hide in your Shell seems to be a great song to listen to when you’re feeling alone. A lot of people have written to me saying that it has given them a lot of support at times when they are feeling very alone in their life." ~ Roger Hodgson

"The Logical Song was born from my questions about what really matters in life. Throughout childhood we are taught all these ways to be and yet we are rarely told anything about our true self. We are taught how to function outwardly, but not guided to who we are inwardly. We go from the innocence and wonder of childhood to the confusion of adolescence that often ends in the cynicism and disillusionment of adulthood. In The Logical Song, the burning question that came down to its rawest place was 'please tell me who I am,' and that's basically what the song is about. I think this eternal question continues to hit such a deep chord in people around the world and why it stays so meaningful." ~ Roger Hodgson

"When I wrote Breakfast in America, I obviously had a lot of dreams. I think I was dreaming of going to America - I think the Beatles had just gone to America. Maybe that affected it. But, again, I was dreaming and having fun one day and this song just flowed out.

The America that we saw on the television was very different to the America that we're more connected to today. It was very archetypal in a way, 'everyone in Texas is a millionaire,' for example. It was just a playful song with a lot of my thoughts, like wanting to 'see the girls in California.' I think the lyric was written in about an hour, so I didn't even stop to think what I was writing. It’s a wonderful light pop song that I just expressed a real joyful place I was in at the time. I was dreaming and having fun one day and this song just flowed out.
